How to Look Tan-Tastic

{Blogged after a visit to the genius bar with my laptop :/} Ok, so I do not claim to be an expert on anything, let alone self tanners.  But I have used them for a long time because I am rarely in the sun (and I have the pale legs to prove it!) and I have developed some tricks over the years.  I think most of us feel better when we have a little color to our skin, but we also know that getting that tan from any way besides a bottle is really bad for us.  Enter my friend the self-tanner.   Since warmer weather is (or should be- dang June gloom) upon us, I figured I'd give you my thoughts on the best way to get that tropical tan --without the plane ride... or the tropics :(

1. Professional Spray Tan- This is by far my preference.  If I can have someone spray me all over with a nice bronzey mist, I am a happy girl.  But this is pricey and scheduling can prove a challenge and I normally reserve this for special events- a wedding or some fancy event I am going to.  So long as you follow the guidelines (e.g., don't shower or sweat or sit on any white couches for at least 6 hours), this is almost idiot proof.

2. Spray Tan Booth- If I can't have someone come over and hose me down with a tan, I will go to a tanning salon and hop in one of those mystic booths.  The important thing here is to choose a color that is complimentary to your skin (like, untan me could not waltz in and ask for the darkest solution they have) and work your way up to a darker tan.   The key to this is the preparation you do before you get into the booth --carefully tuck your hair behind your ears and into a plastic cap. Pay attention as to where the elastic sits on your forehead-- if it is down too far, it will leave a  not-so-charming tan line where one shouldn't be!   Also, use the lotion that is provided as a barrier to those spots that don't need to be too tan- elbows, knees, tops of feet, palms, between fingers and toes, etc.  This takes practice to get it just right,  Then, strip, hop into the machine, hold your breath and follow the poses they suggest.  Once you have been sufficiently misted, you need to carefully wipe off the lotion you applied and lightly pat yourself dry.  This sort of tanning system can be susceptible to drips, so look at the back of your legs, your arms, etc and pat pat pat (no rubbing) until you are dry.  The worst part of this is you have to get dressed when you are still sort of sticky.  Bring loose, baggy, DARK clothes and try not to disturb  your beautiful glow.  I usually try to get this spray tan on a Friday night,   I will go to sleep all tanned up, take a shower Saturday and by Tuesday or Wednesday, I am ready for another squirt.

3. Self-Tanner- For my daily uneventful, just going to work life, I am a huge fan of the self tanner.  I have tried a TON over the years and I will admittedly try anything new that comes on the market.  Now, I do love the products by Stila and Nars that are meant to be washed off at the end of the night and I will use these (and those brushes filled with glitter) all the time.  But my tried and true favorites are St Tropez for my body and Dr Dennis Gross for my face.  I have also recently started using the Charlotte Tiibury Night Mask but I haven't used it enough to form an opinion.  For the St Tropez- they sell a handy mitt that makes it really easy but I never use it.  The mousse texture goes on perfectly after a shower, when you are nice and dry.  DO NOT moisturize immediately before or after you self tan.   It is a dark mousse that allows you to see exactly where are you spreading it.  You will come to know how much you need to apply, but less is more my friends.   Once you have it on, you will need to SCRUB your hands. Like, maybe a few times- your palms and between your fingers especially.  I will do this before work and by lunch time, I am looking tan.  This usually lasts 2 days, so once summer is in full swing and I am wearing skirts, I will do this twice or more a week.   For my face, I really like the pads by Dr Gross.  There are some skin care products built in, but for these, I will wash my face and apply this tanner maybe an hour or more before bed time.  Then, right before bed time, when I know this tanner is dry and wont smudge, I will add my serum and night cream.

And that's it! I want to hear the tanners that you love ... and I will also do a post about sunscreen (as they kinda go hand in hand), because I have some tried and true too.  I linked these products and my cute romper below-- happy Friday beautiful friends.. Sweetly, Michelle

{Written while watching the very last episode of True Detective.  I know, I am playing catch up but this was a meh season for me. The first season? Outstanding. This one? Just meh}  We are in full holiday mode around here, aren't we? I am listening to Christmas music pretty much 24/7, wearing Christmas PJ's (yes, yes I am that person...), holiday shopping, holiday party-attending. Oh my goodness isn't this just the best ever!  And even though I have a kind of.. thing..for wearing black pretty much ALWAYS, there is something about wearing color that I am warming up to.  And if you cant  wear red in December, when can you? (well maybe February. But you get the point!)  These pants are corduroy (pretty awesome in and of itself), fitted, kind of stretchy and kind of zippery too. And this shirt is whisper thin, with the sweetest scalloped details at the cuffs and collar.    I love pink. Its my favorite color for sure, only usually not to wear.  But this might change because I now own these adorable pink shoes too! Yay! With tassels! Double yay!  They are really so cute. I linked everything for you, and a few different colors of these shoes because they are just. that. cute.  So thankful for each and every one of you! Hoping your day is just terrific! Sweetly, Michelle

This one is 100% me. I have a hard time staying serious and I am almost always cracking up!

This one is 100% me. I have a hard time staying serious and I am almost always cracking up!

{Written while trying to think of some place creative to hide our silly elf on the shelf. "Davey" has been out of his box a whole week and I have already forgotten to move him. Twice.}

Hi lovelies! Ok, let me tell you all about this fun little shoot I did.  You know how around the holidays, all of these fabulous ads come out and they show elaborate parties, fancy table settings with beautiful people exchanging gorgeously wrapped presents? I don't know how you all celebrate the holidays, but this is what I would call a FANTASY. This is not real life for me at ALL.  But wouldn't it be lovely to get all dressed up in an amazing ball gown and pretend you were that girl, just for an hour? I thought so!  And have I mentioned before how I am the type of person that thinks if something is worth doing, its even better doing it with someone else? I operate well as part of a team- I played doubles tennis growing up, I work at a large law firm as opposed to practicing solo...inotherwords, I had this idea and couldn't imagine doing it alone! I called my stunning friend Brandee and my other stunning friend @bleudogfotography and this is what we put together.  From the flower crowns, to the location, to the dresses (Mine was Monique Lhullier and Brandee's was Marchesa and we got them both from Rent the Runway. Which was easy and fast and perfect).  How beautiful did these turn out? I want to do this for every single holiday! Valentine's Day! Easter! Groundhog Day! You are going to be so sick of me. You are going to say "There goes Michelle in another ball gown!!  I am telling you, just try it! You will adore it!

This got me to thinking about how printed dresses are so pretty. I tried to link some (reasonably priced) holiday dresses below in case you wanted to try something like this for your holiday party! Happy happy day my sweet lovely readers!

Windowpane, Wine (Color) and Ten Things About Me

{Written with a bag of Swedish Fish on my lap after a long day of Christmas decorating}  Well hi loves! Can you believe our holiday weekend is over?  I look forward to it for so long and on Wednesday afternoon, I'm like " I have four whole days off. FOUR whole days off" and then whoosh. Hello Sunday night...you are here.  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your families.

This little set just called out to me when I saw it.  The color is great, its roomy (the skirt has POCKETS!) and how about those heels? Strappy? High heeled? Patent leather? Um, yes please.   Everything is linked below for you so feel free to shop away (and it's all still Thanksgiving weekend 40% off sale)!

I felt inspired by a few people lately who have shared more about themselves and I loved it so much that it made me want to do the same.  I am a talker, so this list could easily stretch on forever, but here we go:

1.  The qualities I admire most in others are humor, compassion and integrity.  If you can laugh with me, we are pretty much guaranteed to be friends because I am extremely silly and I love to laugh.  The quality I admire most in myself is that I try really hard to be a great friend. I take friendship seriously and if we are friends, I will probably be your friend forever.  Once someone is in my circle, I am loyal and I will stand up for them and listen and care and just be there through the ups and downs of life.  I say find your tribe and hold them close.

2. Along those same lines, family is everything to me.  I have a big extended family and there is no place that isn't made better when they are with me.  My mom is my best friend, my grandmother my closest confidant and I am blessed beyond measure for the strong women in my life.

3.  I am sunset and cloud obsessed. My phone is full of pictures that I take pretty much everyday. For some reason, these things really touch me. I am awed by it.  When in doubt, always look up.  Mother Nature rarely disappoints.

4. I am fueled by sugar. I know, I know. Its terrible. I get that. But there is apparently a long distance between my brain and my mouth because I just shovel it in.  I am all about gummi things and not so much about chocolate. Like brownies and really dense chocolate things? No. But peanut M&M's? Completely acceptable. Chocolate bars (dark or milk?) Yes and yes.  Frozen yogurt (with rainbow sprinkles), cotton candy, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies...all yes.  I have the sweetest sweet tooth ever!

5. I love to read. I will literally read anything, but I like things that I can grapple with and think about. I also really like history- I read a lot of biographies (Winston Churchill is my BOY!) and books about the World Wars.  I am a believer that there is a lot we can learn from our past.

6.  I also love cities. I love the ability to toss on a backpack and a pair of jeans and just explore and see and learn.  I am a very curious person and I love seeing how people in other cities or countries live. I love America but I also love our world. If I could quit my job tomorrow (and like, still feed and dress myself - emphasis on dressπŸ˜‰) I would see everything I could.

7.  I have never been drunk. Can you believe it? I don't like the way alcohol tastes! Weird, I know but I am giggly and loose just normally. When you are drunk, chances are we will act exactly the same (which might say more about me than you, come to think of it)...

8.  I love Disneyland. I have had an annual pass forever.  I can go everyday and never get tired of it. I love fast rides and roller coasters, and the innocence and come on!!  See # 4 above.  Its a food bonanza every time!

9.  For some reason, song lyrics stick in my head. I can hear a song once and the melody and lyrics just stick.  Music and songs are a big part of my life.

10.  This one is a hard one for me to write, because I don't really talk about it.  My brother-- my favorite person on the planet, the funniest, kindest, most handsome person I have ever known- passed away suddenly and it changed me forever.  When someone you adore is gone in a blink, your attitude toward what is important and what isn't is altered forever.  I embrace each day, I look for the good, I try to appreciate everything and I just try to remember that nothing is guaranteed, especially tomorrow. Take chances, follow your heart, forgive easily and laugh as much as you can, because this is a quick journey my friends.

11. (see? I knew I couldn't just stop at 10) I love dogs. I will pet and cuddle and grab for any dog I see. I love all animals but dogs especially.  Even mangy ones get big hugs and kisses from me.

12. (last one) Motherhood. The best thing to ever happen to me.  My heart has opened wide and filled with so much love.  It is an indescribable feeling and a love like no other.

That's all for now my loves.  As always, thank  you so much for stopping by.  It means the world...Sweetly, Michelle
